Job description

The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer (Education) in Modern Latin American History, tenable for 15 months full-time from 1 February 2023. The post will meet temporary teaching needs arising from a staff absence. 

The post-holder will specialize in modern Latin American History.

Your responsibilities will include teaching a document-based dissertation module ‘Dictatorship, Democracy and Human Rights in Latin America since 1945’, a second-year survey ‘Forging State and Nation in Latin America since 1945’ and an MA module ‘Debates in Modern Latin American History’, as well as contributing to departmental core and skills teaching. You will also be expected to contribute to the administration and pastoral provision of the Department of History.

Applications are welcome from candidates with expertise in Modern Latin American History and the ability to teach the modules outlined above. Candidates should have completed a PhD by the date of appointment.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until April 2025

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver team-taught and specialized teaching at UG and PGT level  
  • Contribute to MA teaching and supervision 
  • Contribute to administrative and pastoral provision in the Department of History 
  • Engage in scholarship on Modern Latin American History

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria

  1. PhD in Modern Latin American History completed 
  2. Excellent scholarship in Modern Latin American History 
  3. Ability to convene, teach and assess modules relating to Modern Latin American History across the undergraduate curriculum, particularly those listed in the role profile 
  4. Ability to engage students and support their learning 
  5. Administrative and interpersonal skills, a collaborative ethos, and capacity for team-working 
  6. Strong track record in scholarship relative to career stage 
  7. Experience of teaching and supporting students at UG level 

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of teaching and supporting students at PG level
