Position Overview

KU is seeking a highly motivated Post-doctoral Fellow to work on a funded project on Late Quaternary sea-level and climate change as an analogue for future evolution of the Abu Dhabi coastline.

Sedimentological and geochemical proxy data derived from marine and continental sedimentary archives will be utilized to establish the history of Late Quaternary sea-level and climate change of the Abu Dhabi coastline. A detailed chronology will be established by U-series and radiocarbon age dating of marine skeletal calcite from sea-level highstand deposits, and an integration with existing OSL dates of continental aeolianites. Environmental conditions of alternating humid and arid phases will be constrained by the novel method of dual clumped isotopes applied on carefully characterized marine skeletal carbonates, and on meteoric cements of continental aeolianites. The reconstructed environmental conditions will be used as an analog to predict the impact of future environmental change in coastal regions of the UAE.

As part of the project, the researcher will have the opportunity to work alongside researchers and graduate students from various backgrounds as part of a wider, international team.

Position Requirements

  • Experience in carbonate sedimentology and geochemistry
  • Ability to coordinate and undertake the collection, geochemical screening, and micro-sampling of materials for radiometric age-dating and dual-clumped isotope, as well as conventional carbon and oxygen isotope analysis
  • Experience with geological fieldwork
  • Performing analyses in collaboration with senior scientists locally and internationally
  • Contribute to writing grant proposals
  • Mentoring and training graduate students during fieldwork
  • Train graduate students and lab personnel on analytical methods, standard operating procedures, and safety protocols
  • Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager
