Description

The Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ACCESS) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Associate focused on hydrodynamic modeling and physical oceanography. The position aims to deepen the scientific community's understanding of hydrodynamics in driving critical ecological, environmental, and biogeochemical processes in the Persian/Arabian Gulf.

The candidate will operate under the collaborative umbrella of ACCESS and integrate with an interdisciplinary team of scientists. Affiliations span atmospheric and oceanic modeling, urban engineering, marine biology, and other areas. The position will leverage observational data collected by ACCESS through underwater physicochemical monitoring stations, an offshore research buoy, and the availability of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) for monitoring currents and tides. The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. John A. Burt, co-PI of ACCESS and head of the NYUAD Marine Biology Laboratory, where the candidate’s research will focus on developing an understanding of the physical and chemical drivers of biological and environmental change.

 Responsibilities:

  • Develop a research portfolio that delves into hydrodynamics as a key driver in ecological (e.g., coral larval connectivity), environmental (e.g., mesoscale thermohaline currents), and biogeochemical (e.g., hypoxic zones) processes.
  • Work in close alignment with researchers across multiple NYUAD units, including ACCESS, contributing to a dynamic and integrative research environment.
  • Leverage the available observational data and resources for hydrodynamic research, validating modeling efforts and hypothesis testing.

 Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completed PhD in Physical Oceanography or a related field
  • Proficiency in hydrodynamic modeling
  • Experience with data assimilation and model validation
  • Experience with deployment of observational monitoring devices
  • A record of first-author publications in related fields

 Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Prior experience with ADCP instrumentation, including set-up, deployment, data retrieval and data analyses
  • Experience with MatLab and/or Python
  • SCUBA diving certification is desirable, particularly with experience in underwater instrumentation deployment
  • Previous experience in the Persian/Arabian Gulf is desirable, particularly fieldwork
  • Versatility in writing and presenting for diverse audiences

Applications must be submitted via Interfolio by 15 November 2023. The application should consist of a 1-2 page cover letter elaborating the candidate's background and research interests, as well as how each criterion is met. Also include a curriculum vitae with a link to a Google Scholar profile, a complete publication record (with DOIs or online links for each publication), and contact information for three references. Merge the cover letter and CV into a single PDF file before uploading to Interfolio. If you have any questions, please send them to Dr. Burt at jb3532@nyu.edu

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of security, health, and reference checks, among other HR processes. The position is for a two-year fixed-term contract, potentially renewable subject to performance and funding. The compensation package is highly competitive and fully tax-free, including benefits such as housing allowance, annual flights, healthcare, and provisions for dependents. An annual research budget managed by the candidate is also part of the package.
